Fairview Park steering committee urges full‑time ranger, better signage and more maintenance

The Fairview Park Steering Committee on Tuesday told Costa Mesa city leaders the 200‑plus‑acre park is a unique community and ecological resource that needs dedicated stewardship, including a proposal for a full‑time ranger and improved trail signage.
Chair Cressilious, who described the group as "resident experts," reported that volunteer engagement has grown from two to eight volunteer events per month in the last year and that volunteers contributed more than 500 hours. He spotlighted committee members’ subject‑matter expertise and thanked staff—Brian Gruner and Kelly Dalton—for their support.
The committee recommended three priorities: a park‑based ranger position to increase on‑site presence; targeted infrastructure and maintenance investments to preserve habitat and make trails clearer; and interpretation and wayfinding improvements to help families and new users find and use trails safely. Cressilious said the Fairview Park master plan gives the committee clearer direction and asked the council to improve communication channels between the committee and council.
Council members thanked the committee and noted they would follow up; there were no policy votes attached to the presentation.
