The superintendent explained the state statute that limits how early schools may begin: "no earlier school can start no earlier than 14 calendar days prior to the first Monday in September," referencing Revised Statute 171.031.
Key dates in the approved calendar include new-teacher professional development Aug. 10–12, district PD days Aug. 17–18 and 20, and the first pupil day scheduled for Monday, Aug. 24, 2026. The calendar also adjusts winter break start to an afternoon on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2026, and sets the last scheduled attendance day for Tuesday, May 25, 2027. Administrators said the calendar design incorporates required weather make-up hours (36 required weather-makeup hours and up to 60 hours forgiven under state accounting rules) and leaves flexibility to avoid extending the academic year into June where possible.
The board discussed Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI, sometimes used as virtual make-up days) and the burdens virtual days can place on staff and office employees. Administrators said prior AMI use created heavy attendance-clearing work for office staff and that many in the committee favored face-to-face instruction over AMI for the district.
A board member moved to approve the 2026–27 calendar; the motion passed by voice vote. No roll-call vote or recorded tally was provided at the meeting.
