Scituate School Committee unveils three finalists for new elementary school name; survey open through March 9

The Scituate School Committee on March 2 unveiled three finalists for the district's new elementary school and opened a public survey to gather community feedback through March 9.

Committee co-chair presented the naming task force's process, saying task-force members and a student research project produced more than 80 submissions that were winnowed to five and then three finalists: Enz Hayes Irwin Elementary, Satuit Elementary and Venus Manning Elementary. The presenters said the panel prioritized historical significance, alignment with Scituate Public Schools' core values, and meaningful student involvement in the selection process.

The presenters said students submitted the original descriptions used on the survey and that staff edited them for format and clarity. The survey asks respondents to rate each proposed name on two 1— scales (appeal and how well the name represents the town) and provides an open comment box for optional input. Organizers emphasized the survey is not a mechanism to propose alternative names; it is narrowly focused on evaluating the three finalists.

Committee members pressed organizers on outreach. The presenters said the survey would be distributed via ParentSquare, district social media channels and posters (including at the senior center), and that committee members would share it through their accounts to broaden participation. The task force said the survey is intended to solicit perspectives from current and former SPS students, families, staff, business owners and town residents.

The committee laid out a quick timeline: survey responses will be accepted through March 9, the committee plans an initial discussion (a "first reading") at its March 16 meeting and anticipates a final vote at its March 30 meeting so the builder can begin signage and other name-dependent design work.

The naming co-chair highlighted student engagement as central to the process: "Over 80 students submitted their work," they said, and panels of educators and historical society representatives vetted finalists to ensure historical accuracy. The presenters also noted partnership with the Scituate Historical Society and work by the history department chair to design the student research assignment.

Next steps: the district will publish the survey widely and review submissions at the March 16 meeting, with a final committee vote expected March 30.
