Larry Engel chosen to fill Richland County District 6 seat after 11–6 board ballot

The Richland County Board of Supervisors appointed Larry Engel to fill the vacancy for District 6 after a board-conducted written ballot on Nov. 12, 2024. Engel received 11 votes; Thomas W. Perry received six.
Both candidates addressed the board before the vote. Thomas W. Perry said he grew up locally, served in the Navy, and described long-standing volunteer work with veterans’ organizations, including the American Legion and honor guard. Larry Engel identified himself as a pastor and county resident of more than three decades and emphasized attendance, consensus-building and an ethic of serving the county’s common good.
The clerk distributed non-secret written ballots to the 17 members present, collected and inspected them at the dais, and reported the result. Chair Turk congratulated Engel and said the board would swear him in after the meeting.
The appointment was made during the board’s appointments agenda item; the vote was recorded on the floor and the clerk confirmed the tallied result. No public comment about the appointment was offered during the meeting.
