Board honors student literacy and athletics awards; updates redistricting and kindergarten screening

Bennett introduced students who received the district’s literacy awards and Mrs. Evans, the district language department chair, read remarks submitted by a Spanish teacher about individual students. Mrs. Evans said 44 juniors and seniors were included on the testing plan; five seniors completed requirements for the Missouri Seal of Literacy and one earned the Distinguished Missouri Seal of Literacy. She reported an average weighted GPA for the recognized seniors of 4.277 and an average ACT reading super score of 30 (composite 27). Mrs. Evans also read individual commendations for students including Hannah Carlson and others.
Administrators then presented an update on Eugene Field redistricting: scheduled visits for K4 students to their 2026‑27 schools, welcome letters and videos prepared by counselors to ease transitions, and family nights to introduce parents to new buildings. Carmen Mueller invited the public to a block party on May 17 (rain date May 18) and emphasized student leadership activities.
The board also reviewed kindergarten screening numbers for the fall, with staff reporting 171 kindergarteners enrolled for screening — a decline from prior year counts and from a figure of 254 mentioned during the meeting — and described screening sites and health checks (vision/hearing) to assist early identification of needs.
Board members congratulated students and coaches and thanked staff for transition planning.
