Waxahachie ISD health update: state-level flu 'widespread' and two marijuana positives in high-school retests

Melissa Buskeet delivered the health update, saying district clinics and campuses report fevers and gastrointestinal illnesses consistent with seasonal spread and that the state's flu report is at the highest level described as "widespread." "So, uh we're dealing with it as best we can," she said, and staff are reminding parents about fever and GI policies.
On drug testing, Buskeet said junior-high testing was canceled in January and again in February because of a winter storm and high volumes of academic testing; high-school testing continued. This month's testing covered roughly 30 students, and Buskeet reported two marijuana positives at the high school that were retests of previously positive students. She said one student's THC quantitative number dropped significantly on retest and was considered a negative, while the other's level increased, prompting planned meetings with the student and parent alongside Mr. Escodto and counseling staff.
Buskeet said the district has introduced community-service options for first-time positives and views that approach as more beneficial than previous sanctions. She invited questions and said staff will continue to monitor illness and testing logistics as the school year finishes.
