During the public‑comment portion of the Dec. 11 meeting, resident Michael Tomeis asked when the Sequesta Trace railroad crossing would get a quiet zone, saying noise is depressing property values and disrupting residents.
Village Manager Allen told the council the village had pursued safety improvements first, and that the village had secured $534,000, the amount estimated to furnish the crossing with the required safety features. "I'm going to say this nicely, but this is government at its worst," Allen said, explaining that Brightline had previously offered a verbal commitment to perform the work but withdrew that commitment. Allen said staff will continue talks with FDOT and other partners and provide monthly public updates as information becomes available.
Council members asked whether improvements on the Martin County side of the crossing would affect relief for Tequesta residents; staff cautioned that differences in jurisdiction and funding sources (Martin County versus Tequesta) mean some local benefits could be limited.
Council directed staff to continue coordinating with FDOT and to keep residents informed through written summaries as requested by council.
