The Randolph County Board of Commissioners approved an expenditure of law-enforcement restricted funds totaling up to $295,188.39 to purchase 225 Glock 17 pistols, holsters and red-dot optics to standardize patrol weapons.
Sheriff'9s Department staff said the purchase follows a five-year replacement cycle and that the agency expects to get seven years of service from the new pistols. Major Thacker (lead firearms instructor) explained the agency is transitioning to Gen10 Glock 17 pistols that are MOS-capable so red-dot optics can be mounted directly. He said the red-dot optics specified are more robust than lower-cost alternatives and are intended to withstand duty use.
Staff explained that the listed cost is a gross maximum and that the vendor will inspect trade-ins and apply credits, which will reduce the net expenditure; any trade-in credit will remain in the restricted asset-forfeiture fund. Commissioners asked whether trade-in credits would return to the restricted fund balance and were told the net cost will be charged to the program and remain under the monitored restricted balance.
A motion to approve the expenditure and associated budget amendment passed by voice vote. Commissioners noted the funding source is not general tax revenue but law-enforcement restricted funds obtained through forfeiture procedures.
