Southwest Ranches urges shielding, vegetation and intersection fixes ahead of Sheridan Road meeting

The Town of Southwest Ranches spent a substantial portion of its Sept. 15 meeting preparing for a Broward County public meeting on Sept. 30 about a proposed widening of Sheridan Street west of Flamingo.
Council members said they want a consistent message at the county meeting and emphasized three priorities they will press to preserve the town’s rural character: installing shielding on north-side streetlights to reduce light spillover; retaining or continuing a vegetative noise buffer instead of a hard sound wall; and pursuing targeted intersection improvements — including left-turn lanes and updated signal timing or adaptive signal technology — as lower-cost options to full six-laning.
One council member summarized the council’s stance: if the county proceeds with roadway work, measures to limit light and noise effects and to improve intersection capacity should be required. Council members also discussed negotiating specific design elements and noted they may hire a traffic engineer if the county’s recommendation does not address the town’s concerns.
Town staff and council encouraged residents to attend the county’s public meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 6–7:30 p.m. at the Southwest Regional Library (16835 Sheridan Street in Pembroke Pines). The discussion concluded with the council agreeing to coordinate messaging with the Sunshine Ranches HOA and to monitor the county’s presentation before considering further technical or legal steps.
