Sheldon ISD details multiple new grants: $425,000 LyFT award, teacher residency funds, dual‑credit expansion and PreK outreach

Rebecca Joseph, director of curriculum and instruction, described a three‑year LyFT (Leadership and Instructional Foundations of Texas) grant focused on Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II. “For the first year, we are awarded $425,000,” Joseph said, adding that Region 4 will support professional learning, coaching and classroom rollouts across multiple secondary campuses serving roughly 3,000 students.
Dr. Jeremy and other staff outlined a grow‑your‑own teacher residency and prep program the district expects to expand. Staff said those programs can supply stipends and tuition supports; the presentation described per‑participant funding tiers and noted district matches and residency stipends will be required as the program grows. The district indicated it could enroll multiple cohorts and that program funds would help sustain the existing RAP (residency) pipeline.
On college access, district leaders reported a Michael & Susan Dell Foundation award to expand early‑college/high‑school dual‑credit opportunities. The board was told the grant provides about $40,000 per semester while active and supports regional collaboration with San Jacinto College and other partner districts to scale dual‑credit enrollment and best practices.
To boost early‑childhood enrollment, the board heard that Good Reason Houston will provide an $18,000 matching fund for a community marketing campaign to increase PreK4 enrollment; staff said marketing will include yard signs, banners, digital ads and parent forums to address concerns raised in surveys (notably safety and communication).
District staff also announced a planned half‑day PreK3 pilot at two early childhood campuses, each with AM and PM classes and capacity of about 88 students per campus. Applications are scheduled to open shortly after spring break with a rapid turnaround and possible lottery if demand exceeds seats.
