Petoskey City Council on March 2 approved staff's recommendation to buy a combination sewer-jet and hydro-excavation truck (MEX Super Products Camel Max on a Freightliner chassis) for $598,569.93, funded from the city's motorpool capital allocation.
City staff explained that the aging sewer-jet truck (22 years old) needs replacement and that a hydro-vac truck would be used across sewer, water, electric and streets operations — for catch-basin cleaning, water leaks, safer excavation around underground assets and emergency response during the ice storm. Staff said the selected vendor ranked highest in demonstrations and offered local support/service agreements; the purchase was within the $630,000 motorpool budget line.
Councilmember Walker moved to approve the purchase; the motion was seconded and passed on roll call, 5-0 (Walker, Deore, Knock/Knobrop, Wilmont, Murphy recorded in favor). Councilmembers expressed interest in seeing the vehicle in service and noted it as an investment that will reduce contracted excavation costs over time.
Ending — The new truck is to be delivered and initial operator training provided by the vendor; staff will report back on deployment and expected operations savings.
