Seventh‑grade student Fenix Arazi addressed the Ocean View Board of Trustees during public comment on March 11, urging the board to adopt or enforce limits on homework to protect students’ health and learning time.
"Students already spend nearly seven hours in school only to go home and spend more time on assignments," Fenix said, describing a student survey in which some peers reported 45 minutes to multiple hours of nightly homework and others reported regularly spending seven hours.
Fenix asked the board to consider policies requiring teachers to coordinate assignments so students are not overloaded. In response, Trustee Saers thanked the student for presenting and pointed trustees to the district’s existing policy limiting homework to approximately 10 minutes per grade level — which would amount to about 70 minutes for a seventh grader — and encouraged the student to review the policy and advocate with parents.
OVTA co‑presidents also told the board they would remind teachers about the policy and possibly bring it back to staff for reinforcement.
What happens next
Trustees and teacher representatives said the policy will be reiterated to staff; the student and parents were encouraged to follow up with the district and referenced online policy resources for details.
