The Gadsden City Council on Tuesday adopted an ordinance conveying Lot 8 in Block 3 of Glendale Avenue to Daryl K. Green and approved an agreement to purchase property from England and Associates LLP for $500,000 to advance the CUSA Harbor development.
City staff told the council the $500,000 budgeted purchase price reflects the appraised value of the parcel plus approximately $30,000 intended to offset lost rent the current property owner would experience while tenants relocate. The staff member said the plan is for the current tenants to continue remitting rent to the city until they find another location.
The chair moved adoption of the ordinance conveying Lot 8, noting the item had been presented at first reading the previous week. The motion to adopt carried by voice vote. On the new-business purchase agreement, staff requested the council suspend the rules to consider the item; council consented and then moved to adopt the agreement, which likewise carried by voice vote.
Neither the ordinance nor the purchase agreement recorded individual roll-call tallies on the public record during the meeting; votes were taken by voice and announced as carried. The council did not discuss alternate offers or competing bidders during the meeting.
Council members also approved routine business by voice vote, including the minutes from the Feb. 17 work session and council meeting and ratification of accounts for Feb. 13–19. No proclamations or commendations were presented, and no department reports were offered at the time.
During council remarks, members offered brief comments: Councilman Smith thanked colleagues and staff; Councilman Wilson praised the U.S. Olympic hockey teams; Councilwoman Minatra announced free tax-preparation services downtown and at the East Gadsden Community Center on specified Saturdays; Councilman Robinson offered general appreciation. The chair highlighted the mayor’s State of the City video and said about 91 engineering projects were active.
The meeting concluded with adjournment and no further action on the property items reported.
