Reeds Spring R‑IV schedules playground ribbon cutting, sells career center to support alternative programming

Dr. Hershey told the board crews are finishing the playground subbase and colored surfacing and that the playground will remain closed until a ribbon cutting at 8 a.m. on Sept. 13, which will coincide with a Rotary 5K and a pickleball tournament. “The playground will not be open and available until our groundbreaking on September 13th at 8 a.m.,” he said.
He said the district sold its career center (referred to in the meeting as the GTC or career center) at full asking price to Meta Educational Services and that proceeds from the sale will help the district reimagine and expand alternative school programming. "We have sold our career center, got full asking price and was blessed with that with a really good partner, Meta Educational Services," Dr. Hershey said.
Dr. Hershey reported that additional state funds boosted the career‑center project—he described an initial $17 million award that grew to "close to $19 to 20 million" when combined with bond funds—and that about $1.3 million of bond proceeds remain. The board plans to use those remaining funds to pursue projects including turfing the baseball and softball fields, fencing, lighting, dugouts, retaining walls and parking; staff will begin the bid process and return to the board for decisions in late September or early October.
He also said central office space (adjacent to the high school) is being considered to house expanded alternative programming because the high school lacks spare capacity. No timetable for building a new facility was finalized at the meeting.
What happens next: District staff will scope and bid athletic‑field and related projects and provide follow‑up recommendations to the board for approval.
