Commission approves temporary cannabis consumption event at Pleasantries

Mount Clemens City Commission on Aug. 20 approved a resolution authorizing a temporary cannabis consumption event at Pleasantries Cannabis Company scheduled for Oct. 24–26, 2024.

The resolution, adopted by roll call vote, allows the Halloween-themed consumption event to operate from noon to midnight each day but requires state approval and grants representatives of the Macomb County Sheriff's Office the right to inspect the permitted premises during hours of operation. The ordinance cited for the permit was identified as section 15a of the city's marijuana business ordinance.

During discussion commissioners raised questions about the event application form, noting it still asks whether alcohol will be served and whether it should explicitly ask if cannabis will be sold or consumed on site. A commissioner suggested updating the form to make the intended scope of consumption events clear and to avoid confusion between serving alcohol and allowing sanctioned cannabis consumption.

City staff said the consumption-event approval process requires both local resolution and state approval and noted that consumption on private property still requires state permission in addition to the local resolution. The commission indicated it would consider amending the application language for future events to explicitly reflect whether cannabis (not alcohol) would be served or sold at a consumption event.

The vote to approve the permit was recorded as unanimous among voting commissioners present.
