Mount Clemens approves five‑year MDOT maintenance contract for M‑3

Mount Clemens commissioners voted unanimously to renew a five‑year state trunk line maintenance contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation that covers routine upkeep along M‑3 within city limits.

City staff told the commission the agreement extends from Oct. 1, 2024, through Sept. 30, 2029, and that the renewal retains existing terms and required documentation, including a municipal resolution, certificates of insurance and applicable union agreements. A commissioner moved to adopt the attached municipal resolution and to authorize the mayor and city clerk to sign the contract; the motion passed by roll call.

Jeff, a city staff member who presented contract details, described the request as "essentially a renewal right of what we've had; there's really no change." Commissioners asked whether the contract allows city crews to remove weeds along right‑of‑way; staff said weed control is not included in the state contract.

The contract packet submitted to the commission included the municipal resolution and references to the Supervisor Employee Association and Municipal Employees Association collective bargaining agreements for DPW crew leaders and employees, which MDOT requested be provided upon execution.

The renewal formalizes routine responsibilities for state trunk line maintenance inside Mount Clemens and preserves the current division of work between MDOT and city crews under the terms presented. The commission approved the motion and authorized city staff to execute the agreement.

The commission recorded the vote by roll call; the motion carried.
