Mount Clemens pins badges for three new firefighters; honors three citizens for life-saving rescue

Three new Mount Clemens firefighters were formally welcomed as regular members of the Mount Clemens Fire Department during the May 20 commission meeting, and the city presented Citizen Hero awards to three private-sector employees who rescued a resident from a house fire.
Fire Chief Dan Reynolds introduced Nathan Townsen, Jacob Kenowski and Jacob Piper and said the three had completed their one-year probationary period. "Firefighters, you have successfully completed your one-year probationary period with the Mount Clemens Fire Department," Reynolds said, reading a congratulatory letter that described their new responsibilities and urged them to "set your own performance and knowledge expectations higher than others." Family members pinned the badges in a ceremony at City Hall and the crowd applauded.
The commission also recognized Norberto Alman, Keon Bey and Gary Witcher, employees of Priority Waste, who entered a burning house on April 3, 2024, and removed resident Barbara Goodluck to safety. The city presented certificates and state officials joined the applause: State Representative Denise Mener and State Senator Kevin Hertell delivered proclamations signed by the governor and lieutenant governor. When invited to speak, the resident rescued from the house said, "they save me." The mayor and commissioners thanked the rescuers and the department for their service.
The presentations drew sustained applause and photo opportunities at the front of the chamber. The awards and badge-pinning were ceremonial and did not require further action by the commission. The meeting then proceeded to the evening's regular agenda items.
