Raytown board discusses annual "Walk of Excellence," recognizes RQS Day contest winners

Board members spent a sizable portion of the Dec. 8 meeting discussing a proposed annual community event — described as a schoolboard 'Boardwalk' or 'Walk of Excellence' — intended to raise funds and public visibility for student and teacher incentives.

Community engagement committee members described a 5K (or 5K walk) that would combine in-person and virtual participation, solicit sponsorships from local businesses, involve REF (the Raytown Educational Foundation) for fundraising and donor coordination, and include student-led marketing and volunteer roles. Committee members said they will refine the plan, coordinate with REF and the finance department on fund-dissemination options, and return with a motion and details for board action at a later meeting.

The board also recognized winners of the district's RQS Day 'Why I Love My School' contest, with REF providing $100 gift cards to recipients. Students who won described art and video projects and said the contest helped them express pride in teachers and school culture; student leaders also summarized upcoming school events including a debate tournament and holiday concerts.

Board members emphasized community engagement as a way to strengthen district-business partnerships and support career-pathway programming such as the ninth-grade academy. No formal vote was taken on the walk proposal; the committee seeks to finalize logistics and a proposed budget before presenting an action item to the full board.
