Manassas Park students honored: regional art awards, Blue Ribbon music honors and a Gates Millennium Scholar

The Manassas Park City Schools board used its Spotlight segment to recognize student achievement across arts, music and academics.
Dr. Graer called up student winners from the VSBA regional spring art competition and noted that Jorge Alberto Hernandez Velasquez (elementary), Caitlyn Palasio Ortega and Daniela Cuadros were among the division's representatives. Jacqueline Smith, clerk of the 31st Circuit Court, and the Prince William County Human Rights Student Leadership Council were cited for their involvement in the Law Day art contest, which named a Manassas Park Middle School student as the county middle-school winner.
The board also celebrated music program honors: both Manassas Park Middle School and Manassas Park High School received VMEA Blue Ribbon Awards, which recognize ensembles that earn superior ratings at district concert performance assessments. Music directors Christina Shank (choral), Molly Braski (band, high school), Travis Carden (band, middle school) and Kelly Burer (choral, middle school) were acknowledged for directing groups that achieved high ratings.
Manassas Park High senior Lucas Vargas was honored for receiving a Gates Millennium Scholarship and told the board he plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University to study electrical and computer engineering with a focus in robotics. "I'm going to try the double major in electrical Computer Engineering and their robotics program," Lucas said, and board members offered congratulations.
Administrators emphasized that these recognitions reflect sustained staff and student effort in arts and extracurricular programs and thanked families and teachers for their support. Photographs were taken and the board applauded each student group.
