Board approves 2024–26 secondary math curriculum after multi-year review
Summary
After a two-year review and pilot process, the board approved a set of secondary math materials (including Sengage Math and Math & You for many grades and Envision for accelerated high-school pathways) to standardize grades 6–12 curriculum and replace aging textbooks.
The Bemidji board voted to approve a multi-year secondary mathematics curriculum recommendation for grades 6–12 after a review that involved teachers, pilots and a community input night.
Colleen Cardinudo and Lacy Podmore described a process that began in the 2024–25 school year, involved teacher pilot teams and included community review. The committee recommended Sengage Math/Math & You for many middle and high school pathways; Envision (SAVIS) was recommended for accelerated algebra tracks and certain advanced high-school courses where staff felt additional rigor was needed. In some high-school courses teachers recommended retaining current texts or supplementing with used materials when reading level concerns were present.
Board members approved the curriculum recommendation by voice vote. Presenters thanked teachers who piloted materials and noted that some high-school texts are older and in poor condition, making adoption timely.
The district will proceed to implement the approved materials and to align course pathways and supports across middle and high school with the chosen curricula.
