Gilmer County board approves posting two full-time middle-school interventionists

The Gilmer County Schools board voted Thursday to authorize posting two full-time instructional interventionist positions for the middle school, using unassigned district funds for the current school year.

Superintendent Dr. Manny told trustees the district will post one English/language arts interventionist and one math interventionist to provide small-group pullout, co-teaching and targeted instruction for students who scored just below mastery on the district’s I‑Ready benchmark. "We have several students that are setting very close at Mastery and we want to change something there that can give those students a way that they can reach this Mastery," Dr. Manny said.

The superintendent said the positions would be full-time teacher roles focused on intervention rather than carrying a full classroom load, and that the district intends to try the approach for this year before deciding on its future. "This would be just this year's position... we want to see how this works," he said.

Board members discussed scheduling and credential questions before moving, seconding and approving the request; the motion carried on a voice vote with no recorded roll-call tallies provided in the meeting transcript.

Clarifying details the board recorded include that the positions will be: full-time, teacher‑level interventionists; one dedicated to ELA and one to math; funded from unassigned district funds for the current year only; duties will center on small-group instruction, with some co-teaching possible.
