Auburndale board allows two limited Sunday youth-tournament dates after debate over worship conflicts

The Auburndale School District Board of Education approved a limited exception to district policy allowing two Sunday morning youth-tournament dates for the season after a public discussion about conflicts with religious observance.

Pastor Mark Lungren, who identified himself as pastor of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Sherry and St. John Lutheran Church in Auburndale, urged the board to avoid Sunday scheduling. “You are taking away one of the very few times that they can worship together,” he said, warning that families who miss Sunday games for church can pay for it later with reduced playing time and that the change could harm churches and community bonds.

Board members described a crowded Saturday calendar for the Great Northwest tournaments and other events running from December through February that has pushed some youth tournaments into Sundays. The packet and staff research showed many consecutive Saturdays already booked for league and high-school events, which organizers said left only some Sunday options for youth tournaments.

Under the district’s policy, activities that start before noon on a Sunday must be approved by the board. After discussion, a board member moved to allow one Sunday per season for youth boys basketball and one Sunday per season for youth girls basketball, and to approve the two specific Sunday tournament dates that had been requested for the upcoming season. The motion carried on a voice vote. Board members clarified the action was a limited, season-specific exception and not a change to the underlying policy.

Board members said they preferred to minimize Sunday use where possible and encouraged athletic staff and tournament organizers to pursue alternatives, but acknowledged the league and tournament calendar makes that difficult in some years. The board did not revise the Sunday-start policy itself; it granted the exception for the two requested dates for this season.
