Portsmouth High School Model UN delegates recap award‑filled season and plan expanded calendar

The Portsmouth School Committee on Tuesday heard a student spotlight from the Portsmouth High School Model United Nations delegation, which detailed a season of conference awards, a student‑run host conference and plans for an expanded 2026–27 schedule.
"Model United Nations can be summed up as debates on serious or not so serious global issues," said Gavin Corville, a junior captain, describing the club's role in developing public‑speaking and negotiation skills. Corville told the committee more than 20 students took part in conferences this year and that the team had both competitive successes and leadership in hosting Patriot Month locally.
Senior captain Mae Pachico summarized a long list of conference results — regional events in Providence and Connecticut, a four‑day conference in New York City, Boston‑area conferences and a Dartmouth event — and credited the adviser, "Mister Cassidy, who is the very backbone of our delegation," for his work supporting the students.
Junior captain Benjamin Caton said the program sharpens skills beyond the classroom, including research, parliamentary procedure and compromise. Gavin Bremen outlined next year's schedule and said the club will continue traditional events while adding new competitions and fundraising (bake sales, club merchandise) to support travel costs.
Adviser Mr. Cassidy asked the committee for continued support for travel and noted the students's commitment: "These guys certainly are worth it," he told the committee. Committee members praised the students and the Chair invited the delegation to a future meeting for formal recognition.
The presentation was informational; no committee vote was required. Students said they will continue hosting Patriot Month and preparing delegates for regional and national competitions.
