Road & Bridge updates: chip seal prep, equipment repairs and three new hires approved

Kevin McLain, Road & Bridge, briefed commissioners on routine operations and equipment needs. Crews are blading lower roads and preparing Smoky Canyon Road for chip sealing this summer; three loads of mag chloride are staged and a spray bar is being added to a chloride truck to improve material retention.
Kevin said the county’s crusher needs repair and that he received a $15,000 bid to fix it. He discussed alternatives including leasing a crusher or renting a drum roller from Western States; commissioners agreed to rent the roller. He also reported stockpiled material will be used on the Turner Loop Road and noted challenges accessing the Grace pit without additional dozing.
The board interviewed Road & Bridge candidates in executive session and then voted to hire Jim Frandsen, Pacen Austin and Matt Whiting. Commissioner Somsen moved to hire the three candidates; Commissioner Mathews seconded and the motion passed.
The board also authorized short-term equipment rentals and directed staff to continue evaluating crusher repair versus replacement or lease options; no additional capital appropriation was adopted at the meeting.
