Board hears special-education update; district awarded $25,000 transition grant

District administrators told the board that Beatrice Public Schools was awarded a vocational rehabilitation transition grant of about $25,000 to run an eight-week summer program for students ages 14–20 who use vocational rehabilitation services.
The program will serve 10 students, run in June and July with three days per week of five hours per day, include business tours and job-shadowing opportunities, and provide up to 40 hours of paid summer employment intended to support transition planning and post-school goals. Roberta Lang Weber will oversee the program as the district’s transition coordinator, the presenter said.
In a related update, district staff reported 516 verified special-education students (birth through 21), down from 533 the previous year. Staff attributed part of the decline to the district’s MTSS implementation and stronger core instruction, which they said reduces premature special-education referrals. Administrators also noted an unanticipated challenge: the Beatrice State Developmental Center opened a crisis unit this year and the district has served seven students coming from that center, which has required additional supports.
The board received the reports with no further action required.
