Brookings teacher Alicia Hammond named district nominee for state Teacher of the Year

Alicia Hammond, a middle school special education teacher at Brookings School District 05-1, has been named the district's nominee for the state Teacher of the Year, Superintendent Dr. Summer Schultz said Wednesday on Brookings Radio.
Dr. Schultz described Hammond's special education classroom, known as "the hideout," as a model for the district's approach to serving students with unique needs. “I go there because that classroom, I tell you what, it's special,” she said, citing Hammond's work with students and the broader community.
Dr. Schultz said the state education secretary, Dr. Graves, has visited the district recently and will return as part of the nominee interview process. The statewide Teacher of the Year will be announced at a banquet this summer after an interview and selection process.
Dr. Schultz called Hammond “a shoo in, I feel, but we'll see,” while acknowledging other nominees are also worthy. The superintendent said the district celebrated Hammond with a day recognizing her classroom and teaching.
