Mayor says 4.5 miles of trails complete at West Rock Preserve; community events planned

Mayor Stephen M. Ware told the Hueytown City Council on April 27 that contractors have completed approximately 4.5 miles of trails at the Nature Park (West Rock Preserve) and that he "anticipates the park to open after the Memorial Day Weekend." He also reported that construction on a Chick‑fil‑A location is progressing as planned.
Debbie Kiker, executive director of the Hueytown Chamber of Commerce, outlined upcoming community events including the Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast on May 7 at North Highlands Baptist Church and the Classics Car Show on May 9 at Hueytown Park, and encouraged residents to check the chamber website for updates. Michele McClinton, president of the Hueytown Arts Council, reported recent arts programming including an Art and Author event with ten schools and roughly 100 pieces of student work, scholarship review activity and an upcoming Student Theater Workshop.
In public comment, Mary Meyer of 502 Saddleridge raised questions about basketball programming at the Recreation Center and how sales tax revenue is used to support such services. Joe Rusaw of 1701 26th Avenue North told the council he had purchased a property and planned to demolish and remove the structure by June 1, 2026.
Police Chief Yarbrough told the council the department expects delivery of new patrol vehicles within two weeks. No substantive debate or change of direction on these items was recorded in the minutes; the council proceeded to routine votes later in the agenda and adjourned at 6:36 p.m.
