Nevada City honors John and Judy Vander Veen for decades of preservation and community service

The Nevada City Council presented a formal commendation on April 22 recognizing John and Judy Vander Veen for decades of work rehabilitating homes and commercial spaces across Nevada City and nearby communities, and for volunteer leadership in organizations including Music in the Mountains, Friends of Deer Creek, Sierra Streams Institute and the League of Women Voters.
The proclamation noted the couple’s work beginning in the 1970s and described their long involvement in preservation projects on Zion Street, Commercial Street, Factory Street, Alexander Street, Boulder Street and the Piety Hill neighborhood. Council members read the commendation aloud and the council chamber applauded.
Judy Vanderveen accepted the honor and thanked the council and community. "This town has given our family a wonderful place to live and to participate in the community," she said, recounting mentors, family involvement and years of volunteer work.
No council action was required; the item was ceremonial.
