Commission approves Edward Byrne grant to fund jail body-worn cameras

Riley County commissioners on April 23 approved the county's application for the 2025 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant, a formula equipment grant the county will use primarily to expand body-worn camera coverage in the jail.
Mark French of the Riley County Police Department told commissioners the grant total was “just under $20,000” and that roughly $14,000 would go toward body-worn cameras and associated licensing that lets cameras be "hot-seated" among correctional officers. He described the approach as cost‑effective and said it would allow seven cameras to be in use and reduce the need to purchase a camera for every employee.
French also said the application included funding for four handguns to replace equipment lost to turnover and retirements. After the presentation, a motion to approve the application, certifications and assurances was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote.
County officials said the additional camera licensing should reduce future requests for camera purchases for approximately five years.
