The Jamestown Art Center described a year of expanded school collaboration on April 20 and the board approved the artisan residence program agreement presented under finance.
Mindy Schmidt of the Art Center thanked Jamestown Public Schools for a $146,000 grant that funded large kitchen equipment and related items that support a shared culinary classroom used by students and community classes. Cole Carpenter, the Art Center’s education and exhibitions director, said a K–2 (and broader K–12) exhibition ran for several weeks, included roughly 750 student pieces from about eight schools and hosted roughly 30 field trips and a public opening attended by families. The Jamestown Regional Medical Center selected 20 works from the exhibition for display through July.
Carpenter introduced Lindsay Reyes, the incoming artist-in-residence, who described her background (Iowa State graduate, printmaking and studio arts) and enthusiasm for in-school residencies. "I'm excited to meet all of you, discover what kind of art you like to make, and have fun creating all kinds of projects together," Reyes said.
Under finance, the board voted to approve the artisan residence program agreement (motion by Owen; second by Jamie); the chair noted there was no financial increase tied to the motion. Trustees noted the partnership supports both student instruction and community offerings.
Next steps: the art center and district will continue scheduling lessons and coordinating the residency activities for the coming school year; 20 selected student works will remain on display at the Jamestown Regional Medical Center through July.
