Board accepts Elliott observations report; district not on track for aspirational digital-learning goal

Presenters Levi Hersorn and Deb Hansen described Elliott observations as a student-centered classroom observation protocol (20+ minutes per observation) focused on student engagement, active learning and specific digital-learning indicators. They said the district conducts these observations twice a year and that the spring results are the highest so far overall, with strengths in 'supportive learning environment' and 'well-managed learning.'
At the same time, presenters and administrators said digital-learning indicators remain below national averages and are not on track to reach an aspirational 3.0 goal included in the district strategic plan. "Technology is present in our class, but it might be used for practice or task completion rather than longer sustained deeper work," one presenter said when discussing digital indicators. Board members and staff discussed AI, professional learning needs and how the board might set annual milestones rather than a single long-term target.
The board voted to approve the report and asked the strategic planning committee to review Goal 3.2 and recommend realistic annual targets and implementation strategies. Presenters emphasized the role of purposeful, standards-aligned projects and teacher application time in improving the district’s digital-learning measures.
Next steps: the strategic planning committee will take the report into consideration, recommend annual milestones and return proposals to the board for refinement and adoption.
