Trustees pressed district leaders for details about a reported multi‑year student enrollment decline of more than 200 students and how the district plans to align staffing and budgets to the downward trend.
Superintendent Parsons and finance staff explained that the district uses count‑day data and average daily attendance to project enrollment for budgeting. They said budgets are built on conservative projections and that vacant positions may be left unfilled if projected enrollment does not justify filling them. Parsons noted the district returned roughly $140,000 to the state in a recent year after projections and actual counts diverged.
Human Resources (Cameron) described the internal vacancy posting process for licensed teacher positions: a two‑day internal reassignment window (same school), three additional days for internal transfers (district staff), then the position opens for external applicants. Positions filled by long‑term substitutes or critical‑need hires may remain posted through the year and staff may apply outside the initial windows.
Trustees asked for better communication and for human resources to send reminders to staff about open positions and internal application opportunities. HR agreed to send a districtwide reminder and to assist employees who have questions about applications.
The board requested continued monitoring of enrollment trends and clear reporting on how staffing and budget adjustments will be made if enrollment continues to decline.
