The Churchill County School District board voted to accept the insurance committee’s recommendation to renew medical coverage through Anthem with an added tier‑4 prescription copay structure and to purchase dental, vision and life coverage from Kansas City Life for July 2026–June 2027.
Business services staff and the insurance committee said Anthem’s initial renewal quote was high (about 19%), but competitive bids and a proposed four‑tier prescription structure (a $500 copayment for tier‑4 drugs) reduced the district’s expected renewal to 7.7%. The committee also recommended switching dental, vision and basic life coverage to Kansas City Life to gain access to a larger DDS network of providers and to reduce renewal percentages for those plans.
Committee members noted that the tier‑4 design does not eliminate access to any medication; it assigns medications to higher cost tiers that require larger copayments and that insurance carriers reevaluate tier assignments periodically. Committee members said the change was chosen to limit premium growth while retaining robust medical benefits. Trustees discussed education for employees on cost‑saving options such as telehealth and appropriate use of urgent care versus emergency departments.
The board voted unanimously to approve the committee’s recommendation and authorized LP Insurance to finalize the plan details and prepare materials for employee open enrollment.
