Board approves dozens of contracts, facility submissions and reserve transfers; moves into private session for settlements

At the June 11 meeting the Elizabeth Board of Education approved a large set of agenda items (tabs 10 to 10SS, with a handful of items pulled for later consideration). The slate included contract renewals and vendor appointments for food service (Metropolitan Foods, Driscoll Foods), instructional supports (AVID Center), therapeutic and nursing services (Stepping Stones Group, ESS, Children's Specialized Hospital), and multiple facility funding submissions for HVAC and electrical upgrades at named schools.

Board members asked detailed questions on several contracts before votes, seeking clarification on scope, bidding results and whether services are first-year awards or renewals. For example, commissioners discussed the AVID Center professional development contract, a dual-enrollment contract tied to Edison, and an SHI International contract for data backup systems. Staff responded that some awards were low bidders on competitive procurements, others were renewals, and some supplemental agreements had been added during the year.

The board also approved transfers of current-year surplus to capital and maintenance reserves and multiple requests for submission to state or county funding programs for HVAC and electrical projects at specific schools (including Mitchell Building, school Nos. 12, 26, 27, Madison Monroe No. 16, Thomas A. Edison Career Technical Academy and I-Prep Academy No. 8).

Before adjourning the public portion, the board moved into and approved a private (executive) session to consider workers'compensation settlements, the legal settlement item MFD v. EBOE and other personnel- and settlement-related matters. The public record shows the agenda motion to approve the items passed on roll call during the meeting and the board thereafter recessed to private session for the listed exempt matters.
