EA president urges Board to settle contract as negotiations resume

John Griffin, president of the Education Association and a classroom teacher, told the Elizabeth Board of Education during public comment on June 11 that the district's 4,000 educators deserve a fair contract and respect.
"I'm going to believe in you," Griffin said, urging the board to settle the contract. He told the board the association was returning to the negotiating table the next day and that members expected to hear good news afterward.
Board members publicly responded that they value educators and hope to negotiate "on a united front," and the negotiations committee later reported it had been briefed on offers, counteroffers and three-year cost projections at meetings held on May 16 and June 16. Chairman Jerry Jacobs told the full board the committee had been updated on cost-out proposals with the EA and EASC.
The public comment and committee update together signaled active bargaining but no formal agreement was announced publicly at the meeting. The superintendent and several commissioners reiterated a commitment to work with educators so that raises are secured, layoffs are avoided and negotiations move forward.
