Hunt County proclaims June 2026 Elder Abuse Awareness Month after APS reports 311 investigations

The Hunt County Commissioners Court formally proclaimed June 2026 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month on May 12, and a representative of Adult Protective Services told commissioners the county recorded 311 investigations for abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of older adults and substantially disabled adults in fiscal year 2025.

During the meeting an APS representative (speaker 8) thanked the court for previous support and described the county’s two seasoned investigators who handle adult-protective-work in the county. "We do have 2 seasoned investigators that work this county," the speaker said, and noted the office’s investigators were out in the field that morning. The APS representative added that elder abuse is highly underreported and that 311 is likely an undercount given the difficulty of observing vulnerable adults in public.

The court read the proclamation into the record and approved it by voice vote. Commissioners thanked APS staff for their work and posed no substantive changes to the proclamation language.

What comes next: The proclamation urges residents to report suspected elder abuse and to support local adult-protective efforts. Commissioners took a photograph with APS staff following the vote and asked staff to make the proclamation and awareness resources available to the public through county channels.

No formal funding action was taken during the meeting; commissioners noted staffing and resource constraints in other agenda items when discussing budgets but did not attach any immediate budget instructions to the proclamation.
