Granbury Cultural Arts Commission presents biannual report, announces airport dedication

Mary Ella Riley, chair of the Granbury Cultural Arts Commission, presented the commission’s biannual update to the Granbury City Council on April 21, 2026, outlining recent public-art projects, education programming and community partnerships.

“The Granbury Cultural Arts Commission is pleased to present its biannual update highlighting the organization's continued efforts to enhance the cultural landscape, economic vitality, and visual identity of our community,” Riley said. She described two new works by artist Bill McGrath installed at the Granbury Regional Airport terminal — an exterior sculpture titled Granbury Wind Wave and an interior installation titled Clouds Over Granbury — and said a formal dedication is planned at 1 p.m. on May 13.

Riley highlighted the commission’s use of a national call-for-entry platform that produced more than 40 submissions. She said the commission’s art-talk series and an informational session with Chris Kiley of Texans for the Arts emphasized the economic benefits of arts investment and the role of hotel-occupancy-tax allocations in supporting public art.

The commission also described the Out of the Box program, which will transform utility boxes along Highway 377, Business 377 and Highway 144; Riley said 25 boxes are planned and four sponsorships have already been secured. Other initiatives noted included a steamroller art project during Harvest Moon and collaborations with local groups such as the Granbury Art Association and Lake Granbury Art Association.

Council members thanked the commission for its work; no formal council action was required. The commission asked council to continue supporting public-art funding and partnerships that, it said, enhance visitor experience and residents’ quality of life.
