Christa Yoakum elected chair; committee slate approved over Commissioner Schulte’s objection

Christa Yoakum was elected chair of the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners and Chelsea Johnson was elected vice chair during the board’s Jan. 8 staff meeting at the County‑City Building. Commissioner Sean Flowerday moved the election; former chair Rick Vest seconded and the board approved the motion unanimously (5–0).
The board later considered and approved the slate of 2026 committee assignments after discussion about leadership roles and alternates. Commissioner Matt Schulte said he had previously asked for additional leadership responsibilities and stated his intent to vote no; the roll call recorded four yes votes (Rick Vest, Chelsea Johnson, Sean Flowerday, Christa Yoakum) and one no (Matt Schulte). The motion carried 4–1.
Members discussed treating a regular county media segment as a chair responsibility while allowing other commissioners to participate depending on the topic and availability. The board also emphasized flexibility for alternates and development of broader subject‑matter familiarity among commissioners.
The actions taken were procedural and organizational; no additional authority or staffing changes were adopted at the meeting. The board adjourned at 10:32 a.m.
