Students honored for Rock to Change summit as board celebrates district programs

The West Irondequoit Central School District Board of Education on April 23 honored students who planned and led the 10th annual Rock to Change Student Summit on Race, a student-driven event that drew more than 350 area students and included host schools from across the region.
Superintendent Dr. Johnson and advisers thanked the students and acknowledged advisers Mrs. Maldonado and Mr. Orlani for their support. Administrators described the summit as student-led planning that included opening speakers, small-group conversations and activities designed to foster understanding and community connections across diverse perspectives.
The board presented certificates and pins to participating students. Named in the meeting were students and honorees including Trayvon Bell, Elijah Bridge, Chloe Curran, Bethlehem Delasa, Mallerie Dinaro (not present), Henriquez Mar, Maj Muhammad, Nahara Taylor Wright and Leilani Wilson.
Administrators said the summit's tenth anniversary reflected sustained student leadership and staff support. The recognition was part of a longer meeting that also included routine business and the board's budget adoption vote.
