Sunnybrook SD 171 holds ceremonial groundbreaking for new track and regulation soccer field

Sunnybrook SD 171 held a ceremonial groundbreaking on school grounds to begin replacing an existing field with a new running track and a regulation-size soccer field, a presenter at the event said. “We're going to break ground because in the next two weeks this whole field is going to be demolished. We're going to have a track,” the presenter said.

The presenter said the new facility will allow the school to host its own track and field competitions instead of students running around the outside of the building. “Our students will no longer run the mound around the outside of the building,” the presenter said, adding that the infield will include a regulation-size soccer field for a recently developed soccer team.

Officials on site pointed to displayed blueprints prepared by WR Engineering Group and said the project will include lighting, security and a fence around the field. “We will have lighting and security and a fence that goes around it. We will open it up for our community to come and get athletic and get their exercise on,” the presenter said.

At the ceremony, the presenter acknowledged the school board's sponsorship and invited board members to participate in the ceremonial shovel toss using gold shovels. The presenter asked attendees to save Oct. 3 for a community celebration to welcome the finished track. Participants performed the ceremonial shovel toss to mark the symbolic start of construction.

No funding sources, contract values, construction timeline beyond the stated demolition window, or formal approvals were specified during the remarks. Projected construction milestones and any permitting requirements were not discussed at the event.
