Mukwonago board elects officers, adopts curriculum resources and tables attendance-boundary and music decisions
Summary
At its reorganization and regular meeting, the Mukwonago Area School Board elected officers, approved AP Biology and third–fifth grade ELA adoptions, approved a marching-band trip and tabled both the Archdiocese attendance-boundary recommendation and the district music-program decision for May.
The Mukwonago Area School Board completed its annual reorganization and passed several routine and instructional items on April 20.
Officers: Dale Porter was elected board president (8–0–1, Porter abstained), Carolyn Simon was elected vice president, Jake was elected treasurer and Crosby was elected clerk; Eric Schwartz was named the district’s CESA 1 nominee.
Curriculum adoptions: After pilot reviews and teacher/student feedback, the board approved adoption of Biology for the AP Course (2nd edition, BFW) for AP Biology and adopted Amplify CKLA for grades three through five; the ELA adoption quote was reduced after negotiating shipping to 6%, lowering the six-year total to about $267,649.
Trips and personnel: The board approved an extended marching-band trip to Indianapolis (Drum Corps International Pre-Preliminary Finals, Aug. 6–7) with Emma Angeli listed as director/chaperone. The board also approved a set of hires, resignations and contract recommendations, including a hire for a 4K teacher and the reclassification of Brandy Klaus from social worker to AODA coordinator.
Attendance boundaries: The board considered an Archdiocese of Milwaukee recommendation to change attendance boundaries for St. James and St. Joseph parochial schools. Following public comment expressing concerns about busing impacts and family disruption, the board voted 6–3 to table the attendance-boundary recommendation until the May meeting; administrators were asked to follow up with affected families and provide counts of impacted students.
Music program and next steps: Administration presented two detailed music-program proposals (differing on pull-out instruction, co-taught models and elementary entry points). After public comment and multiple roll-call votes that failed to pass either option, the board voted to table the final music-program decision until the May meeting. Administrators were directed to return with updated schedule/staffing models, participation metrics and any community-partnership plans.
