OGDEN — At the study session the Weber School District board received routine committee and superintendent updates, including a finance and audit committee report recommending accounting changes for technology purchases and a superintendent briefing on staffing and policy work.
Brock Mitchell, reporting for the finance and audit committee, said the committee reviewed the capital budget and recommended retaining Chromebook and desktop purchases in the capital fund rather than shifting those charges to individual schools’ general budgets. His rationale: treating those devices as capital purchases helps protect the general fund while still allowing schools to replace devices using existing trust or TSSA plans.
Mitchell also said the district is reviewing ClassWallet spending, noting that roughly 96 percent of purchases had been made on a single marketplace and that the district has been spending about $50,000 annually through that channel; the committee is exploring changes to reduce costs and simplify teacher purchasing.
Superintendent Gina Butters told trustees the district’s policy manual has been fully updated for the first time in four years and thanked trustees and staff who led the work. Butters said the district is now beginning policy reviews driven by the legislative session. She outlined staffing adjustments tied to a multi‑year enrollment decline and said several administrative positions have been reduced following a recent retirement that led to one assistant superintendent role being absorbed.
Butters also noted recent and upcoming public events: Governor Cox is scheduled to visit Valley Elementary to sign legislation, the district is running literacy “book drop” events where students meet authors, and UHSAA trustees hired Ryan Bishop as the new executive director; Butters said trustees will continue to monitor athletics realignment criteria being developed by UHSAA.
The board did not take action on finance recommendations at the study session; staff will return with follow‑up details as requested by trustees.
