York HRC plans outreach push with reprinted posters, staff badges and a refocused September diversity event

"There are two QR codes. One has our 185 and the other one says scan for Spanish and Creole," Samaro said while describing how the poster will link to translated materials. Commissioners corrected the wording so the code label reads "Spanish and Creole" rather than "Spanish and Haitian," and discussed minor orthography and diacritic preferences for Creole renderings.
Commissioners also supported asking the city for more formal identification for HRC staff. The investigator said the current badge "only says my name and it says Human Relations Commission," which has sometimes led to pushback during outreach and enforcement visits; commissioners agreed that a city-issued badge that indicates role (for example, "Investigator") could improve credibility.
Planning for the commission’s annual diversity event continues: a planning group is aiming for the third Thursday in September (Sept. 19) and is considering the Valencia Ballroom and the Bond as potential venues. Commissioners discussed shifting the event’s emphasis from nonprofit leadership attendance toward grassroots outreach and student artwork that illustrates what diversity means to young people.
Next steps: staff will obtain printing and lamination quotes before requesting a requisition, request city approval for formal badges, and the event planning group will finalize date and venue to allow deposits before the summer recess.
