The Albert Lea City Council voted Oct. 27 to declare 917 South Broadway Avenue surplus, waive planning commission review, and authorize sale of the parcel for its assessed value of $15,400.
Staff told the council the property, in the B2 business district, previously contained a blighted structure that has since been demolished; the city has invested about $16,000 in code enforcement, demolition and related work. The sale will be split between adjacent landowners — Kelly Plumbing and Dick Davies — each paying $7,700 to acquire portions of the lot for additional parking or future expansion.
Councilor Howland asked staff to confirm the site’s history and location on a map; City Engineer Steve Janke said the lot is now empty following demolition. After opening the public hearing and asking three times for comments, the council closed the hearing when no members of the public spoke. Councilor Anderson moved to declare the property surplus, waive planning commission review, and authorize the sale; Councilor Olsen seconded. The motion carried.
Officials said the sale recoups nearly the full amount the city expended on remediation and will allow adjacent property owners to expand parking or business operations. The resolution does not include additional conditions beyond the sale terms approved at the meeting.
