On suicide prevention, Sulttus said state code requires that when a child is identified as at risk for suicide, the division must provide suicide‑prevention materials to parents (not to the child). The materials should include information on safe storage of firearms and recommended strategies for reducing access to lethal means, she said. "We added a line that provided to the parent materials on suicide prevention that include the information on the legal requirements set forth in the Virginia code relating to the safe storage of firearms in the presence of minors," she said.
Staff also proposed changing policy 7.007 from a three‑day notification window to a five‑day window to align with the Code of Virginia; Sulttus said the change was a straightforward alignment. Finally, an administrative regulation was amended to add licensed nonprofit daily after‑school child‑care providers (examples cited: Boys & Girls Club and YMCA) to Class A entities that are exempt from facility fees; staff recommended creating long‑term agreements for these organizations and will bring formal agreements back to the board for approval.
Sulttus recommended moving the policy updates to the consent agenda. The board signaled agreement to advance the items.
