Roanoke County board hears progress report on CTE center, Condiff and Glen Cove renovations

Construction managers told the Roanoke County School Board on Monday that the new career and technical education (CTE) center is moving from heavy earthwork into finishing trades and that two renovation projects at Condiff and Glen Cove are close to substantial completion.
Wes Mitchell, identified by staff as the CTE project manager from Scanskow, said site rock removal is “pretty much all gone now,” the front parking lot is to subgrade and storm structures are set, and utility poles have been relocated to allow upcoming paving. “That’s a huge milestone,” Mitchell said about the cleared rock.
Dr. Ken Nicely and Mr. Todd Kaggels summarized other work. Kaggels said roofing in one zone (Area D) is largely complete, brick veneer and stacked stone are progressing and interior mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough‑ins are underway. He added that sprinkler installation and CMU framing are substantially complete in many areas and that decking and steel erection will continue in coming weeks.
On Condiff and Glen Cove, staff reported that demolition and in‑wall rough‑in work are finished, cabinetry has arrived, window and door installations are nearly complete and the parking‑lot curbing and gutter work should allow first-layer asphalt within days. “We should be done with that probably this week or next week,” a district presenter said of remaining work at Condiff.
Board members asked about timing and a possible topping‑out ceremony; staff said they were aiming for a September event timed to construction milestones. Board members also asked for reminders about substantial‑completion dates; staff gave target dates for the projects and said the district will issue more precise schedules as punch‑list work concludes.
Next steps: staff will circulate scheduling updates and formal substantial‑completion dates, and the board will be kept apprised of any impacts to the start of school or ceremonial plans.
