Vinita council approves equipment purchase, donations and airport engineering amendment

Vinita — At its April 21 meeting, the Vinita City Council and the Vinita Utility Authority approved a series of routine purchases, donations and a contract amendment aimed at maintaining city services and advancing airport work.
The VUA approved using VA solid waste capital outlay unforeseen funds to purchase a rolloff assembly and install it on a recently acquired 2025 F550; the vendor listed was Atlas Steel and the requested amount was $9,130. “We bought it from Bill Knight Ford … just cost more than I thought it was going to cost to outfit it all the way, but it is nice,” Mr. Smith, the BUA/VUA superintendent, said of the new six-yard rolloff truck.
The council separately accepted a $5,000 donation from the Levit Foundation to fund live music at the Vinita Route 66 Centennial Celebration and a $2,000 donation from Cabin Creek Wind Energy LLC for the Craig County Technical Rescue Task Force; both donations were accepted by voice vote.
Council also approved Estimate 1257 from Vicory Family Heat and Air for $7,000, to be paid from building/property-support funds, and approved a participation/use agreement with Vinita Main Street to operate the Vinita Route 66 Welcome Center. The Route 66 agreement had been considered in committee prior to the full council vote.
On airport work, council approved Amendment No. 17 to the city’s services agreement with LBR Inc., which continues phase one construction of a taxiway and apron at the Vinita Municipal Airport and supports related entrance-road work. The mayor and staff described the amendment as a step toward longer-term airport improvements contingent on FAA and Oklahoma Department of Aeronautics funding; the mayor said he hopes to seek funding later for a terminal building project.
The council recognized two upcoming retirements in the Vinita Fire Department — Captain Kevin Grimes, retiring May 2 after about 20 years of service, and Assistant Chief Russell Hayes, leaving May 30 after nearly 30 years — and received an update on two noncompliant hangar leases at the municipal airport; legal counsel said a hearing is set and staff may proceed toward public sale if compliance is not achieved.
All motions described above passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
What’s next: Staff will proceed with the rolloff installation, process donation acknowledgments and continue work under the amended airport agreement; the legal office will pursue compliance or sale of noncompliant hangars following scheduled hearings.
