Glencoe honors employee who flagged phishing attempt that targeted multiple municipalities

The Village of Glencoe on April 16 presented its quarterly "Glencoe" employee awards and highlighted a records specialist whose quick action helped stop a phishing campaign. Village Manager Carali read the names of 22 award recipients and joined staff in presenting framed certificates.
Kelly Burns, a records specialist in the village’s records office, was recognized for identifying a suspicious email that purported to include a grand-jury subpoena and for immediately notifying IT and supervisors, prompting an investigation that determined the message was part of a wider phishing campaign. "Kelly's vigilance, professionalism, and prompt action helped protect the village's systems and sensitive information," Village Manager Carali said during the presentation.
HR Manager Katie Dar and Assistant Village Manager Adam Hall were among staff who described the village’s Glencoe awards program, launched last year to highlight employees who reflect the municipality’s core values. Other employees named included maintenance equipment operators Eddie Andrews, Raul Hernandez, Shaina Lesnovich and Oscar Suarez; records specialists Jeannie Surerac and Mara Trusky; IT support engineer Jakar Saunders; accountant Diane Harris; and Deputy Chief Andy Pearly, Assistant CFO Margaret Schwarz and others.
The village used the recognition event to emphasize cross-departmental collaboration on recent operational projects, including a parking-management system and a records/dispatch software migration. The board paused normal business to present the awards and take a group photograph.
The presentation concluded with the board thanking staff for their work and encouraging continued attention to cybersecurity and interdepartmental coordination.
