Council members on April 14 heard updates on an inaugural Alabama Arts Trail event set for May 8–9 and related downtown improvements intended to support pedestrian safety.
Ray Wetzel and Kay Moore described the two-day arts festival that will bring about 27 arts organizations to downtown Gadsden, a Mother's Day market, artist demonstrations and student portfolio reviews. Organizers said Alabama Contemporary Edmobile provided significant funding for visiting artists and performances.
Councilmembers also described street-safety work in downtown Gadsden, including installation of a speed table on the 500 block of Broad Street intended to slow traffic and improve pedestrian visibility. Officials said construction would close the block for roughly 10 days to two weeks, with the 400 block scheduled after the May 8–9 festival to avoid disrupting the event. Businesses will remain open and are encouraged to use rear entrances and available public parking during work.
Council praised the combined emphasis on arts-driven downtown activity and pedestrian improvements as complementary steps to boost safety and economic activity.
