Monroe County convention-board accepts property transfers, authorizes negotiations for College Square hotel site

The Monroe County Capital Improvement Board voted unanimously to accept conveyance of several parcels of land from the city redevelopment commission and the county, securing parking lots the board said are vital to the Bloomington Convention Center expansion.
Board President John Wikart explained that the transferred parcels include a south overflow parking lot and the lot behind the Courtyard by Marriott and said acceptance cements the board’s control of key development parcels. The board then debated hotel-site strategy and voted unanimously to authorize negotiations with Deborah Meerson, president of the Bloomington Redevelopment Commission, over acquisition of the College Square site as the preferred location for a host hotel.
Wikart said the land transfers position the CIB to pursue a hotel developer and clarified there may be city expectations for reimbursement if RDC-owned parcels to the north are integral to the project. City council member Sydney Zulik spoke during public comment in support of the CIB’s negotiation efforts. The CIB scheduled a follow-up meeting for May 20.
